Who I am?
My name is Auria, a Franco-American woman about to bike across the United States, from West to East. This journey will start in San Diego, CA on February 29th, 2020 and ends in St. Augustine, FL, 3042 miles later (approximately 2 months later). When I am not biking cross-country, I work for a non-profit organization called Willowind Therapeutic Riding Center, in Bar Harbor Maine.
What is Willowind Therapeutic Riding Center?
Willowind started as a grassroots organization 22 years ago and is now deeply embedded in the fabric of the community of Mount Desert Island and the surrounding region, helping Maine families from the counties of Washington, Hancock, Waldo, Penobscot and Cumberland. Willowind offers riding lessons to an average of 25 riders weekly, of all ages, year round and provides equine-assisted service to children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. Our clients include children and adults with challenges such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, depression, brain injury, anorexia, blindness, speech delays, motor delays, and more.
The Center contains eight lesson horses, an indoor riding arena, one barn, a newly built outdoor riding ring, one paddock and a leased pasture. We strive to keep lessons affordable and accessible for the community and therefore subsidize lessons by 50% for all riders, regardless of income.
What is this journey about?
“Pedal 4 Power” is a fundraising journey to bring sustainable energy to Willowind’s barn. The Center would like to install solar panels to power the barn, indoor riding arena and tackroom. The total cost of this installation is estimated at $16,000. The “Pedal 4 Power” campaign’s $8,000 goal will be matched by donations from our Annual Summer Fundraising Event.
The 2 main goals of “Pedal 4 Power” fundraising journey are the following:
- To raise awareness for Willowind’s services and more generally for the benefit of equine-assisted therapy for mental and physical health.
- To help Willowind towards sustainability and by doing so, contributing to develop our local community’s environmental commitment.
During my bike journey I will cross 8 states, the fundraising goal of $8000 means raising $1000 per state crossed; will you help me make Willowind a greener place? Please visit our go fund me page @ https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/pedal-4-power-3042-miles-to-bring-solar-energy-to-willowind-therapeutic-riding-center1
The money raised will not only allow Willowind to install solar panels on the barn, but will take a step in the direction of a better future for the next generation. We will be a local leader by participating in the state of Maine’s efforts to create renewable energy and providing clean energy jobs, while fighting climate change!
Thank you all for your continuous support!
